Fold

To fold a hand is to surrender the hand (and the game) to your opponents. All good players know when to fold and see no shame whatsoever in doing so. Weak players hate to fold and consequently lose more games than they win.

In online poker games, players can fold by simply hitting the Fold Button. In brick and mortar casinos, saying you fold is a binding declaration. Also, you can fold by giving your hole cards to the dealer or by laying your hole cards down into the "muck" pile. In all cases, a fold is permanent and cannot be taken back.

When playing stud poker, where some of your cards are face up, a common way to fold is to place all of your cards face down.
