MattVIP: Also, what are you using right now? Maybe you don't need a new machine but a small upgrade.

I've had this for 8 years now Laugh . I have been told by my coaches that once you get to 100NL thats where Pio crops up. I have been advised to get a AMD FX 8350 chip by a relative who's into gaming, but had a look on 2+2 and Pio guy says there super slow compared to Intel chips. So really my new system is going to be focused around what could handle Pio.

If you're really into Pio calculations you need a consumer i7 at the very least which means that you need at last 1k for the build. Maybe a bit less if you're budget conscious but when it comes to machines that can handle Pio the more money you have for the build the better.

Been spending way to much time on this. But this seems to be the cheapest I can get it down to.

I have had a few ideas to get the cost down, would there be a big drop in performance if I got a slightly older i7 and used DDR3 RAM instead?. The other ideas are to just wait until the new year, will parts be cheaper then?, and the other idea is to get a AMD Zen chip, do you think that would be comparable to an i7?.

Thanks

I can see that you did your homework. I'd most likely go with something similar if I tried to build a machine with Pio in mind while being budget conscious. Zen chips might be the reason to wait though, I doubt they will rival Intel offerings in terms of single core performance, but 4-core processors were a staple for a very, very long time in consumer computing and Zen might change that (which is good because Pio can actually utilize the additional cores and threads). Also, aftermarket CPU cooler would be a necessary quality of life improvement for me. Stock intel coolers are super noisy so spending additional 20-30$ on an aftermarket solution would be a must for me (Examples: One, Two)

Yeh I think I might be patient and wait tell the Zen's come out, because am nowhere near ready to be using pio, but just trying to look ahead. When you say '4-core processors were a staple for a very, very long time in consumer computing' do you mean before people used all there cores before say in gaming, but now in gaming the games only run on a single core?.

Also just checked on Partpicker and noticed this. It seems pretty dodgy to me, because even in the US this chip comes out at £450, but then am thinking well this is Amazon so its got to be legit right, or isn't that always the case?.

It used to be that games and most of the software utilized mostly one or two cores and only some prosumer dedicated programs could benefit from 4+ cores (like Piosolver for example). That's why it's easier to find a phone with 6-8 core CPU than a desktop PC. Nowadays, more and more applications start to utilize more cores but since Intel has the hold on the market and they've been pushing 4-core CPU's forever AMD has the chance to push the envelope a little bit and introduce 6+ core CPU's to the wider public.

As for the Amazon link, I'm actually not sure if this can ever be a scam. Given Amazon's popularity, I doubt they'd risk anything shady, but you'll have to confirm that with someone in the know.

After I posted this I did a lil searching, and I think it was, because that cpu was going for £260, and I clicked on that link yesterday and suddenly the priced and seller had changed.

So i broke my monitor anddddddd basically just clicked return on amazon, they picked it up and sent me a brand new one. Pretty decent Smile

Well AMD are early, I was just looking to see if there was any price movement ahead of what I thought was the AMD launch, and its barely changed since I last looked, does anyone know when the price war is going to begin?. Also was expecting these chips to be cheaper than Intel i7's, but there not and obvious at the moment dont come with onboard graphics, is it to early to find out how all the Ryzen range performs against the i7's?.

Thanks

It's really hard to speculate before we get the access to the reviews and benchmarks, but there are some price movements happening already with Ryzen launch, at least in US: http://wccftech.com/intel-amd-price-war-ryzen-processors/

@MattVIP maybe you can answer this one. 18 months ago I bought this for £400 as a cheap travel laptop. Today when I look for SDD options, they seem to be of worse value.

Did I just get a good deal, am I looking in the wrong places or did the price of SSD laptops go up recently?

Same issue I had with my comp @Harvie - seemed if i was going to buy a new one I would be going backwards!

Dont let that article fool you mate, they where at those prices when I looked months ago.

@Harvie I'm not an expert when it comes to pricing, but the truth is that Moore's law is kinda slowing down. It's not like you can buy that much more power for 400 quid now than you could 18 months ago, plus there's the issue of local manufacturing/distribution problems (a few years back one factory famously burned down which affected the RAM prices for a very long time etc.). The issue is even more pronounced in mobile devices where manufacturers have to be mindful of the complicated design issues (inefficient cooling in confined space etc.) and overall market saturation so yeah, you can't really expect to buy a much better laptop for the same amount of money.

@Gus Fring Sure, it's hard to imagine that Intel will show their hand before Ryzen chips actually start getting out there. My predictions are that AMD chips will be solid and viable though a bit slower than what the leaks are showing which will in turn help AMD gain some of the market back and will induce some modest price drops on intel parts (nothing spectacular, though). That being said, I'm just making an educated guess and it's super hard to say what exactly will happen. We'll have to wait for a few weeks to find out.

MilfGrinder: Aaaaand it's done! Ordered and can pick it up on Thursday. Smile Thank you very much!

This is how my order looks: To my standards it looks like a monster PC! (I think this is my most expensive single purchase ever lol)

Hey @MattVIP !

Been a while since I got my PC, and lately I've been having issues with some poker rooms (like Unibet) - I cannot get their clients to work and the conclusion is that it's due to my PC not having GPU. So time for an upgrade I guess. I'm not doing any gaming, so I want to keep the price as low as possible.

Here's the SHOP!

Thanks again!

Interesting. Your computer has a GPU integrated with the CPU and since that implementation is very popular in laptops I find it hard to believe that integrated GPU is really necessary to run Unibet and/or other poker rooms, so the issue might be somewhere else. Nevertheless, if you're looking for a GPU on the cheap I wouldn't go lower than GT 1030. Those 30-50 euro GPU's are usually on par or slightly more powerful than the GPU that you're currently using so if the GPU power is really an issue I'd pick 1030 to compensate. Just make sure that your monitor has one of the ports that are present on the card (HDMI or DVI-D).

Yeah it's really weird, no one has been able to solve this issue for me. All the time I thought that it's due to domains being blocked by provider, but it's not the case. I had some problems using some functions of OBS too due to GPU. Unibet support told that it might be due to old video card and the tricks they suggested didn't work. Pretty annoying Laugh

Sounds tilting that's for sure!

@MilfGrinder Now that I think about it, can you write some more about your issues? Again, GPU being at fault doesn't sound right in a vacuum so maybe I'll be able to think of something once I know more about the details.
