Desktop Apps To Make Your Life Better

Posted 8 years ago

What apps are people using to make their laptop or desktop experience smoother?

I am currently using:

F.lux - it's an free software program that automatically tones down the brightness of your screen based on the time of day. It removes all blue light after the sun goes down. Apparently this is a big deal if you have trouble going to bed at night if you spend all day on your computer.

Connectify - turns my laptop into a Wifi spot. Ideal for me as I travel a lot and can use the cafe or hotel wifi for my mobile and Kindle.

I'm in the market for software that allows me to use hot keys to move applications from one monitor to the other. I'm currently using Ultra Mon but that is $40 to a license, which is pretty steep given I just need a few simple hot keys.

What are you using?

I just d/l F.Lux and will give this a good try. When I am more disciplined about sleep habits, I try and be off the computer by no later than 8 pm for this reason.

My recommendations: These are browser extensions, not desktop apps, all are free and available on Firefox. The first one at least is also avail for Chrome.

I can't believe people don't use AdBlocker Plus (ABP). It always shocks me when I use a friend's computer, I literally look at different internet than everyone else, and I am very thankful for it.

More for people who are willing to put in a wee bit of work, but I also run NoScript. I hate opening news/sports pages and getting the videos popping up and running automatically. NoScript is more effort to set up, but to me it's worth it.

I also run Ghostery cuz I hate cookies/tracking, but this is probably just me.

How's F.lux working for you @CycleVancouver? Until 2015 I never had an ad blocker, I don't know what I could do now without it YouTube is finally bearly to use.

I also forgot to mention I use Window's Sticky Note. Perfect desktop app to remind yourself to do things, useful for me as I work online:

Speaking of useful browser extensions I also highly recommend Website Blocker/Stay Focused to help with procrastination. I usually block certain sites that can be valuable, but quickly turn into huge time-sinkers like (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter etc.) during my working hours so I can be more productive.

Other than that, instead of looking for different up for every task I usually use Evernote for my notes, writing, keeping track of workouts, budget, goals etc. While the tool is not perfect for any of those tasks it is good enough and I enjoy having everything in the same place.

@Harvie F.Lux is fine, hard to know if it is working or not but I'm sure it can't be a bad thing. Only catch is that I plug my laptop into my TV for evening streaming, and I have to disable the program every hour, at least until I figure out some way to make it only work on my computer monitor and not on the TV.

F.Lux is great for me and I also have adblocker+. i don't know how to move things from one screen to another though so I just have them both as an extended screen, which can be a bit annoying sometimes tbh.

@Pwll download something called Display Fusion, it lets you set a hot key to move the tab you're currently looking at to another screen. It just makes things much faster for me when I'm on the computer. It has a bunch of other features too for free.

@Harvie thank you very much, I'll give that a go. Smile
