Posted 8 years ago

Hi guys, not posted for a while...been playing a lot recently and putting in lot of hours at $0.5/$0.10 and $0.10/$0.25 as my friend who is a poker player staked me! i had recently had a break from the game so came back feeling fresh and ready for some serious grinding!

things started of great, then boom i had cooler after cooler, i was getting monsters and never getting any action! this caused me to start playing bad!! getting frustrated, making bad calls, when i know my self FOLD JASE!! trying to force things thinking that i should win the pot! I Know this is what poker is all about and you have to take the bad beats ect.

but i cant seem to fix the mental side of the game! i know i can be a winning poker player i have great instincts. i just suddenly lose my head and i want to change it asap!!.

just wondering if any body has any tips, and recommendation on books?

thanks jason

Take some breaks if you feel yourself starting to make sub-optimal decisions. If you can identify that you are playing worse than you can take a break, even a short one! Go out for a short walk, get some fresh air etc.

Always remember, the coolers play themselves. There is no point getting frustrated when you run your KK into AA or 33 vs TT on a 37T flop. They happen and they will all balance out in the long run. Look at hands objectively and identify the spots where you could have done something differently and look to improve. Mistakes are awesome, they are how you improve as a player. Nobody plays perfectly and there are always spots where you can improve so look for them and be happy when you find them!

thanks for this... i always look at hands and see what i can do better! i just seem to quickly lose my head when things are not going my way. i recognise when im tilting and i still seem to carry on. start flatting 3 bets with QJ of out of position. little things like this i know are wrong but yet still do them. and pay people of for fun Sad

I also start to tilt when im really doing well and having a good session, i feel like i can play more pots as i feel like im running the table and then get my self into silly situations!! and my profit for the session slowly goes!

It can be a super frustrating game to play when you get into that kind of mindset. Best advice I can give is to take breaks when you feel it is happening, and to make sure that you are playing with an adequate bankroll. I found that when I started playing using correct BRM that the swings stopped bothering me and I was able to continue playing without my mindset being negatively affected. (For the most part at least, obviously I can go on tilt from time to time! Smile )
