wow, that's a tilting end to the session Emo

The last 50 hands is like a punch in the stomach after being kicked in the nuts. I lol'd when I saw it because it reminds me of the days when I would grind, have a losing sessions then have 2 cooler losses in the space of a few mins, snap quit and then look for something or someone to kill.
Posted 7 years ago*
@Discomfort , na not really, just coolers blind v blind at the end is all, we've all had days like that before and will again.

@Harvie haha, ye that just about describes it perfectly Laugh but I've had enough +3, 4,5 BI sessions that I don't bother about losing anymore these days, just sit out, watch the telly and start again.

Today I will mostly be, 'trying to play well and win a bit.' Punch

So I'm working on failure to cbet correctly which is by far my biggest fail. I'll be ok in a month or so which is when I should get a bankroll, probably for nl10. I do have a little left on Party and I have two tickets for Powerfest MTTs, one a 5.50 and another for 22, but I shall have to be like Bruce Lee and expect the unexpected to do well in those obviously.

My goal of becoming a decent player in a year still has 7 months to go and I at least feel I'm getting there now. As Harvie so knowledgeably pointed out, I could be playing higher anyway by now, but that's not my main goal yet even though I comfortably beat this lowest of limits.

Meh, I'll just bink the 22 for 5 or 6K and play nl25! Hey, I can dream to y'know! Party

I would say that you are probably already a decent player. That being said, and not to be too nit picky, but what does that mean even. Its a pretty broad statement. A couple of things I learned about goal setting was that you want to be as specific as possible and you want to set deadlines. Seems you have the dead line, but I would have to say that your goal is not very specific.

Like what does being a decent player mean to you, what does that look like? One of the things I started doing with goals around poker is to not set goals that involve money or skill. I set goals that are more action oriented. Like I am going to play x hands per week, I am going to do x private coachings per month and x group coaching per month and x amount of flop call downs or other theory based analysis per week, i am going to post x HH on my coaching forum per week or month. The way I figure it, is if i am doing all of those things on consistent basis and overall improving my ability to make the BEST possible decision I can in every spot then the money will follow and I will, by default, be a good player and will move up the stakes.

Just some food for thought, you can do the dishes!

A decent player in my mind is a winning reg at micros, doesn't have to be 25bb/100, just 5bb+ which seems to be the norm for such people and eminently achievable for me.

I agree about the goals thing and will fix it now. Instead of making 'being a decent player' a goal it should be an aim. My goal can be shorter term as it should be, making cbetting the goal for the next few weeks. I really am hopeless at around 39-40% but then I do get a lot of multiway pots, in which, I am vastly improved and can even steal 4 - handed when the opportunity presents and I'm 'on my game' as it were. Position rocks Smile

Making the best possible decision given the circumstances will probably be next time round, I'm keeping it simple for now and that's a bit all-encompassing and a little above my pay grade as yet.

Thanks for popping in by the way, I don't expect people to be much interested but I do appreciate input and constructive criticism - and it's always nice just to chat.

Laters, town shopping again now, gotta buy a dishcloth. Hug

No probs. Always interested in what you and @Grocker6 are up to, since we used to roll together on the staking team.

Notice I actually didn't say the BEST possible decision, like ever in poker. I said that I can actually make. So based on my knowledge and experience and the info that I have, make the best decision I can actually make. I will know when I am in a spot where I am not sure what the BEST overall play is, so then you can mark those spots and have a look at them or share them.

If you need help with anything let me know. Not sure how productive or realistic looking at those family pots will be though Cheeky Not much you can do, other than what you are doing when you have absolute position.

Hey, I think I might have a little input here. A lot of people think about stuff like "I must try to cbet more and get it up to 63%" or whatever. But that in itself is absolutely meaningless. You can't just attempt to cbet more without understanding what it means. Basically when using a good strategy and knowing why you're cbetting on what flops with what hands optimally means it will by nature end up in a certain ball park.

One of the things I've tried to focus on more lately is understanding WHY I'm making a cbet or checkign back or whatever on what board. And the possibilities that can happen if I make which ever play I choose. Is there a reason why I shouldn't? What happens is I'm to get raised? Am I clear what I should do then? How does my hand play on further streets? Sometimes just having a certain suit in one of your cards makes the difference between a call or fold. Can I successfully 3 barrel this vs my opponents range if he can have x hand here and not x hand here on whatever runout it may be? How does this hand compare to other hands that I could have here to use as a bluff etc etc. Basically I've found that if you work on the WHY's rather than the numbers (after we of course have all the fundamentals down) then the numbers and percentages will take care of themselves.
I'm not saying this is you, but I know from my own experience that I and many others used to just look at this stuff like, "Ok i have to get this 3bet percentage up now and make sure mt cbet is above this or that" without actually understanding what the heck that meant in my hand to hand play.
We don't want to be aimlessly clicking the bet button more because we've felt our percentage is a bit low.

fawltyfelix: I will know when I am in a spot where I am not sure what the BEST overall play is, so then you can mark those spots and have a look at them or share them.

There are a fair few spots that a few plays can actually be very close ev wise, and sometimes you can't really say which is the best, you'll just have to go with what you feel at the moment vs opponent you're facing, but it's definitely something to note. Poker isn't all clear-cut decision wise and sometimes 2 decisions can be pretty equal.
Posted 7 years ago
Well said Dan. I agree completely, knowing why you are betting is very important. Is it a value bet or bluff? Is it for protection/thin value or maybe potentially for future EV via bluffs on later streets or made hands on later streets, etc.

Agree with second post as well. When you start looking at solvers you see this a lot. Solver will show EV of a bet is X and EV of a check is X and both EVs are very very close.

Thanks peeps!

So, fairly happy with preflop although there are a couple of things I could work on. For example, multiway bluff squeezing, but it's not exactly a big deal at micros is it. There are one or two other tweeaks to come but overall quite pleased as far as it goes.

Put some time in to get my cbetting sorted out over the last week and it's gone from around the 40% mark to approximately 60% already and I win so many uncontested cbets it's unreal. Huge improvement, just monster huge.

Next will be to 2 barrel or not to 2 barrel, that will be the first question.

Second one is when to raise a flop cbet, be it bluff or value.

Not sure where I'm going with raising flops yet so I don't know if I should be kinda balanced and raise the nuts as well as bluffs, plenty of fun stuff to get my little brain cell around, but I'll get there soon enough; I thought this was a good board, I would bluff raise this versus this same player:

$0.02/$0.05 No Limit Holdem PartyPoker
6 Players

Blinds 0.4BB/1BB6
UTG $202.8BB
UTG+1$120BB
CO $103.8BB
D $101BB
SB $60BB
BBHero $164.4BB
Preflop
6$1.4BBHero is BB66
1 fold, UTG+1 raises to 3BB, 3 folds, Hero calls2BB
Flop
2$6.4BBA6A
Hero checks, UTG+1 bets 3.6BB, Hero raises to 10.8BB, UTG+1folds
Final Pot $20.8BB
Hero wins$27.4BB (net +$13.6BB)

I'm not winning lately, but more than happy with my progress. I really do think I'm getting there, I'm just a bit sloooowwwww is all.

Laterz.

Been trying a couple of things last few days like donking out from the BB when the BU limps, SB (tight reg) completes and I have trash in the BB where the flop is something like J626 or some other clean board. Working a fair bit but too early to tell if it's super profitable given the rake.

Also check raising flops a good bit, sometimes bluffing, sometimes for value and sometimes because the opponent is just a bad reg:

http://www.pokerhand.org/?6829671 (Weaktight is a mess for some reason)

Thought when they called the flop raise it had to be an overpair or tens, if it's tens then meh, cooler; but feel free to laugh at my expense ok? Laugh

Think I got the check/raise stuff going ok but definitely don't donk anywhere near enough, but then who does except the fish anyway? ... exactly the point!

Laters, it's wine - o - clock and my eye is on the blink. It wasn't me!

I wouldn't say there is reason to laugh at you on that hand. I would be happy to sit at a table with that guy. He is 3betting 66 COvMP. I guess its not terrible. It is at the bottom of my calling range there, but certainly not standard. I guess the cbet isn't terrible. I suppose some might say its for thin value/protection, but when you raise him and he calls.....wow, just wow. I mean if he is 3betting 66 COvMP then I guess if you are going to pick a hand to slowplay pre, than this is the one to do it with. Although looking at the hand I wouldn't be surprised if this guy calls a 4bet with this hand, so you may have actually missed some value there. Giggle

@fawltyfelix lots of regs like that one buddy, seriously. I probably made about 19 mistakes anyway in the hand so, woteva. You're still welcome to laugh, I did, honest guv I did. Puke
Anyway, that hand put me down to $23 yesterday after some horrendous stuff, but then I got a mission finished by hitting a straight flush (hands have to go to showdown):

Lucky me because it takes some rather large cahoonas to play 2 tabs of fastfold with a $20 bankroll for two weeks! Muscle

Not only that but mrs mal is working extra hours so I can haz $100 for my happy birthday on the 25th. Is she just the bestest eva or wot!? Party

Trying to get a hud with my own popups going but no idea how to get the popup to show in the hud when I hover over it so not going great. The only YouTube vids I can find are in bloody Spanish or whatever; no offence to my Spanish buddies but no speaka da lingo por favor. My bad, so I'll look around on HM2 site to see what I can see.
