Fold for me without further reads, 98s would be at the top of my folding range. With reads it may be a call.

This is a fold for me too. I think 98s can be a fine open from MP but for many players it won't be profitable if they don't have good post flop skills.

Playing OOP is hard even with our strong hands, so hands like 89s whilst looking super pretty can often turn ugly post flop, especially when we flop a pair and have to act first on every street.

I think too many players open too wide from EP/MP, which can be extremely confidence sapping and tilt inducing, especially in modern games when we're going to be facing a 3bet a decent amount of the time from one of the four or five players left to act behind us.

I think we can do what we like with this, fold until we know more, call and see a flop IP to SB or 4bet, just to let them know we came to play(entirely mood dependent on my part!).
My own most common move would be fold preflop to be honest, because I'm a bit of a nit until I get some info on my opponents and a move like this from SB is considered a strong move versus an MP open - by me at least! Smile
