When it comes to placing bets online, there are a number of strategies you can look to implement. While some of them are popular, and certain players will use one more than the other, it doesn't mean you will be able to guarantee a return. Any wager you place, even if you have done plenty of research, remains a matter of pure chance.

Games such as poker demand higher skill levels, and you can look to work out the probability of one hand over another, but this is usually left to the professionals. It is however, not advisable to start seeing casino games such as blackjack and roulette purely as games of skill.

When looking to place a bet, it is important to look online for the best odds and get betting promos that give you value for your money.

Calculating odds and reading bluffs

Poker strategies will usually revolve around calculating the odds that your hand is the best among the other players at the table. Once they have done this, some poker players will study their opponents' moves to see whether they appear to be bluffing that they have a better or worse hand than they do.

Calculating the statistical outcome of a game of poker is a different game from placing a bet online in another gambling market – for example, a sportsbook or a casino game such as roulette.

However, when it comes to huge poker events such as the World Series of Poker, being able to read a player's body language is an integral part of the game.

If you attend the World Series of Poker, you can watch it unfold in real time. There are other tips to take on board if you're looking to make the most of a few days of attending the biggest poker tournament.

These tips should be included in any successful strategy. Top players find it easier to pick up on their opponent's body language. You may also be able to master it at the poker table, given plenty of time and practice.

Suppose you're still learning the ropes regarding this particular element of the game – in that case, playing with smaller hands and smaller wagers is advisable, so you don't find yourself far worse off financially. Once you learn how it works properly, you can begin to amend your hands accordingly.

There is far more to a successful strategy than being able to read your opponent, although it is, of course, integral to any successful player's approach. There also needs to be a collection of other attributes that will help you to come out on top in a game of poker.

Patience, patience and a bit more patience

Another attribute that will assist you and your poker strategy is the ability to be patient. Patience is a virtue in almost all games, but this is especially the case in poker. Some sessions can go on for hours, with multiple breaks. You don't want to rush your hand in poker, as it can reveal your strategy. Even appearing restless at a table or making small movements can give the game away if you’re playing against a more experienced player.

There are many crossover skills from poker that you can successfully implement in your betting strategy. As we have touched on already, one of the key factors is to be patient and ensure that you can take your time.

Being able to read your opponent is another fundamental asset to any card game, and requires some level of strategy and skill. It applies more so in poker than blackjack, for example.

Knowing when to fold

The final part of your strategy that we think will benefit you when placing bets is knowing when to fold. This is probably the most important aspect of a successful strategy and can make the difference between a good and a bad poker player.

The odds of being dealt a good hand are fixed. There isn't anything you can do to amend these odds. However, having the ability to use the hand you have to your advantage is a pivotal part of a poker-playing strategy.

If you have calculated the odds as accurately as possible, it is good to know when to fold. Some players will use a high-risk strategy and try and bluff their way to a large profit with a weak hand. While this has been known to work, it is a bold move and can backfire quite spectacularly if somebody calls your bluff.
