Newish to the game.

Posted 8 years ago

Hi Guys, Im Stephen and im from scotland. Been playing poker badly for about a year now, thats why i class myself as newish. Im just looking for someone to point me in the right direction. Wanting to take it more seriously but work will get in the way a bit, i work unpredictable hours. Currently got a bankroll of $60 and have bought HM2. Is there any reading material that you guys recommend or videos to get me started. i know the very basics and have bought 2 books. Crushing micro stakes by Nathan Williams and Harrington on cash games but really struggle to get into them. Im more a Learner by my ears and not by reading. currently play 2nl and Im Kinda breakeven to losing player Sad just need pointed in right direction. thanks in advance

Hey buddy

You have come to the right place!

The best place to point you is to our unique school which you can check out Here, You will see the courses marked beginner then all the way up to advanced whilst even seeing courses in the mental game of poker.

In there you will have a mix of written and video content and it is all 100% free. You just have to be logged in and you're good to go!

Also I would suggest posting/reviewing hands Here and also creating any threads when you need help with theory, strategy or just general advice Here

Which site you are grinding?

Good luck

Hi @Stephenjayy

A warm welcome to PokerVIP Smile Glad that you took the time to post and you are definitely in the right place.

As you like to listen rather then read, I would recommend you take a look at some of @Jon-PokerVIP s micro stakes video content. (Maybe he is too modest to recommend his own content! Wink ) I have been grinding the micros for some time now and I found this series "Crushing WilliamHill Micro Stakes" very helpful so that could be a good place for you to start. The "Crushing Unibet Micro Stakes" series is another good one for the micros.

Also its worth mentioning that Pokerstars is a very tough site. Not only is the field tougher but the returns are pretty much non existent at the lowest micro stakes. There are tons of soft sites that have great bonuses, free cash etc, I would suggest you look to move site and try somewhere else, you will find it much easier to make a profit.

Do you use Skype at all? If so add me keri.pokervip and I'd be happy to have a chat and recommend some nice rooms for you. Or feel free to drop me a PM at anytime Smile

Hi there. Thank you very much for your reply. I started to go thru the poker course. I'm past beginner stage so I starter on intermediate lessons. I watch a series called the micro tank also which I thought was very good. Jon does a great job in this series explaining every thing. I'm going to rewatch that series this afternoon on laptop then play maybe 2 hours this evening. Can you recommend and sites where I can use the hud. I heard a few sites have banned these. I've just paid 60 dollars for it so don't want it to go to waste. I'm currently not on Skype but may try to set it up as I've heard of study groups on there which are helpful

Hi Stephen I'm Paul

I've just ventured into the online world from being a live player and I'm also grinding micro stakes I'm also new to HUD and stats so I watched a few videos on them on here one which helped me a lot is W34ZLE's video called how to become a profitable poker player..it helped me understand some basic stats and where mine should be at. Although I've only played about 3k hands so far this site has defiantly helped me in understanding some differences between live and online poker...would be good to follow how you get on you could post in the my poker journey section

William Hill would be a great choice for you @Stephenjayy - Its on the ipoker network so you will have plenty of traffic, you can use a HUD there and if you use our Pokertube.com deal (Our sister site) you will get €20 free cash when you deposit €20 or more straight to your poker account which will be a nice little bankroll booster for you. You also get a fast clearing bonus upto €1500 + VIP rewards up to 35% and we run some really cool exclusive tournaments with cash and prizes added over there too which may be of interest to you.

Here take a look. If you sign up, just remember to use the code PTWH to get your free money Smile

Hi Paul, Thanks very much for the comment, i will check out the video. I have 14000 hands on cash but when i first started id play 180 man sng, i played cash games far too high for my skill level on stars also. i am minus $70 on cash games in 14000 hands. But now its time to change, stop being a fish and study as hard as i can to improve my game. I've also subscribed to your post. look forward to following your journey.

@Crazykeri. i will definitely check this out. whats the lowest stakes on William hill as i dont have much money to spare for poker. i have my stars bankroll that is all, could i get away with starting with a 40 euro bankroll with good bankroll management?
Posted 8 years ago
Yes €40 should be good @Stephenjayy - With the €20 free, that will bring you straight up to €60 and you will have the bonus also which will be released as you go. The cash games start from €0.01/0.02 so that will give you 30 buy ins to start which is fine I think. Smile

Yeah just keep studying and getting involved in the forums, posting hands from HEM etc, you will get lots of help and advice and I'm sure you will build that bankroll up in no time.

Also keep an eye out for Season 3 of OnlinePokerLeague which will include WilliamHill with the money/prize added tournaments I mentioned. This is set to start very soon, we will post in the forums as soon as its set in the Free Bankrolls & Promotions section Smile

Thanks CrazyKeri ive replied having some trouble.

Paul what stakes are you playing?

Welcome to the site, Stephen. Where in Scotland are you from? If you're having trouble with William Hill, why not try some of the other Ipoker networks where you haven't made an account before? There are 8 different sites so that shouldn't be a problem. But saying that, I have 2 William hill accounts, I just used a different email address when singing up the second time.

I'm the same with books. They bore me. There are plenty of videos on here to get you going. Just play ABC poker (raise with your good hands and fold your shit hands) at 2NL. Nothing fancy!

GL at the tables.

It's just the depositing part for William Hill as I only have a debit card or PayPal but they don't accept paypal

Hi @Stephenjayy

I saw your PM, did you manage to get a deposit method sorted for William Hill in the end?
