Sports bettting

Posted 7 years ago

I've known all my other poker playing friends to be regular punters on sports, so I thought I would see how many other degens I can find!

I lump (unsuccessfully) on football and now I've really started to get into horse racing. Been running pretty well in the past few weeks!

Anyone else regularly bet on sports? If so what sports and what kind of bets do you normally go for?

I'm surprised you didn't get more answers. I'm a super casual sports bettor, I bet very rarely, small amounts and my only aim it to increase my enjoyment of watching a sporting event that I care about, but most of my poker friends dabbled in sports betting and a good number of them were at least somewhat passionate about it. My old poker buddy is also into horse racing lately which strikes me as a bit strange, to be honest. Isn't horse racing more on a gambly side of the spectrum as far as sports betting goes?

Horse racing is definitely high variance! I find it quite fun and relaxing reading the morning paper studying form whilst having my breakfast. I love football betting and will bet every weekend pretty much. Even in the off season im still finding profitable markets.

Me and a friend completed a £20 to £1000 challenge. The money was good and it was fun looking at the different bets. Our final single was around £640 on Sheffield Wednesday to beat Ipswich. It was great fun and we will definitely be doing it again in the new season.

Didn't see this earlier, would have replied. I like betting small amounts just for enjoyment but I'm always looking for +Ev situations. The issue with major sports is that is usually well priced so we can't make any money on it unless there's such a big public favorite that the line gets skewed. I used to be more involved in going against the public when the line would move, especially in college basketball even though I can't stand the sport. That was nice but with 2-3% ROI on 1.91 odds you need huge volume and the swings can be nasty.

For the past 2 years I've been working on a system for hockey betting. Nothing crazy, I just specialized in betting on if a goal will be scored or not during the first 10 minutes of play. My ''system'' basically tells me if the line seems to be correctly set or not, it's really a spreadsheet where I input some numbers and get some averages and predicted ROI. It's high variance but profitable so far. I'm just using a simple 1, 2 or 3 unit betting system and I like it. I'd be happy to share some tips come next hockey season, always nice to share winning bets.

Not sure if that's accurate or not but I like having my accounts on poker sites having a history of betting and maybe playing a hand of blackjack here and there when they offer +Ev bonuses, feels like I get better customer service when they see I'm not just a poker player.
