NL100 River sizing with range?

Posted 8 years ago

OK so I played a sesh on my laptop yesterday which meant I had no HUD and played this particular hand where I am actually hero with 88

villain is in BB with over 200bbs hero has 140bbs out of sb with a very active aggressive image
hero opens villain 3bs
T62r villain cb hero calls
T turn hero checks villain checks back
river 9 no flush completes
hero checks villain bets 24 into 30

How do you guys play this street by street upto this point?

Whats your plan on the river here with your range both value and bluffs, are we interested in check raising if so what size?

How do you think villain should react with his range / what should he bet fold for value, bet call and bet fold as a bluff?

Pre: Standard obviously.

Flop: I like betting this board. If we have an aggressive image we can be betting here for value for sure, and on the flip side if we check it will seem suspicious. I would be betting around 60% pot here.

Turn: I like checking here to try to induce some bluffs from villains floats against our line.

River: I would be check calling here. Villain should not be showing up with much T/9x here too often but can definitely have some overcard floats that he decides to bluff river with.

I think my post my be a little confusing - We are hero with 88 in SB I think preflop flop and turn are pretty standard to be honest. The river is where things get interesting with our range, I'm asking what hands do we arrive at the river with and how should we play them?

How should Villain react to how we play our range - if we lead what hands should we have for value/bluff and what should villain be call, raise, folding with?

If we check and Villain bets what hands would be interested in check raising for value/bluff and whats size should we use - how should villain react to that with his range?

Looks standard up to the river.

With an aggressive image I wouldn't be looking to check raise bluff in a BvB spot when he still has all the overpairs which can play this way, as well as some slowplayed Tx

Calling I'm not sure about. I would expect him to check behind with a lot of his Ax overcards when he expects to be good against your own overcard floats some %. It's really difficult without having some idea how villain is constructing his 3 bet range when we're a little deep. Feels like a fold to me against an unknown, but if you have any indication that he has a lot of suited Kx Qx junk which never wins at showdown then I don't mind a call.

On the river Villains range is JJ - AA for value, maybe quads, maybe but unlikely 9s full. Hands that check back AK AQ and some 79s 89s combos. He has some random bluffs that can't showdown - std junk and maybe some weaker Ax that don't want to showdown.

I do think that population is Cbetting once and checking back on a perceived scare card far too often here.

Our range is pretty strong, 9Ts - ATs, 78s, 66 and 99 that are all made hands then 67s 89s 77 88 and some random 2 over cards with BD FL draw type hands but not many. as well as JJ QQ that opted not to 4b because of our stack depths.

Villain will very likely bet AA KK on this river hoping to get value from our 1 pair hands, it's likely they'll bet some JJ QQ too but could be afraid of the c/r

Based on above assumptions it makes sense to have a check raising range. We have hands that want to get max value vs over pairs, as a result we need some bluffs too.

So it makes sense to check jam hands that don't block AA KK looking to get hero calls from those ie TJs QTs 6s 9s Ts and 78s (15 combos) giving villain roughly 2/1 on a call we can have 7 or 8 bluff combos. I think 88 and a couple of 89s combos are perfect to check jam here as bluff (we block any potential 78s that villain could have 3b and played this way)
Villain is in a pretty disgusting spot with his over pairs now and we don't need to worry about being called as were perfectly balanced.

Then we can bet some hands aswell to get value from his 9x, JJ QQ that may be afraid to value bet and A high hands that would be checking back - so lead river with the ATs KTs JJ QQ, blancing these value hands with our 2 over card back door flush hands that c/c flop and bricked, some AQs KQs depending on the sizing we choose..

Interesting hand to break down IMO, if anyone has any thoughts to add go ahead Smile

Solid Post ^! Thats exactly how I would copnstruct my range and its super important to make work of the table like this so you dont have to think this much in game. Spots like this that come up so frequantly should be "automated" by work of the table.
